A Darker Shade of Magic Review

A Darker Shade of Magic by V. E. Schwab

This is a story about our main character Kell who is an Antari which means that he possess the power to travel between alternate Londons. This story is very adventurous and has so many great characters woven through out.

If I had to give this a star rating I would give it a 3.5 but since Goodreads doesn't do half stars I rated it 4 stars on Goodreads.

I have tried to read this book a couple times before and I just never could get into the story but upon picking it up this time I really found myself in the mood for the story that was being told.

So there are four different Londons which Kell has named Grey London (which has no magic), White London (which has magic but isn't thriving as well), Red London ( which is where Kell lives and is thriving with magic), and Black London (which has been shut off from the rest of the world.)

I thought that the world building for this story was good. I didn't feel like the world was quite as atmospheric as I would have liked but I did really enjoy exploring the different Londons. The characters I enjoyed the most were Lilah and Kell but that is because they were the only characters that really felt completely fleshed out.

I know that this is the first book in a series and I am willing to give the next book in the series a chance because I really do like the adventure that Lilah and Kell embarked on in this first book and I would like to see where their stories go from here.

My main problem with this book is that the pacing felt a little off for me. I would be reading and feel like I could just put the book down and not be on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen next. I think that for me this kind of story where there is an adventure there should have been a little bit more action to keep me pulled in to the story.

I know so many people love this book series and I can see why I just haven't jumped completely on the bandwagon with this series just yet.

If you have read this book come talk to me in the comments about your thoughts. If you have any recommendations for adventure fantasy book comment down below. I would love to hear from you.

Love always,
Missy
