Review of The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin

The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin

This is a fantasy story with three different timelines as the book starts out. We have Essun, Damaya, and Syenite. The timelines come together and I really liked how each of the story lines connected with one another.
This is a story about a world where there are people called "Origins" and they have the power to cause or quell earthquakes and so much more. This story really is amazing because of how diverse this world and the people are described to be. One of the things that I really enjoyed about this book was even though there were plenty of diverse characters through out the story there were still people who didn't like some of the characters just because they weren't "normal."

I gave this book 5 out of 5 stars on goodreads.

So lets discuss what I loved and what I didn't like

Loves

1. The world building

The world building in this book was so good I loved how connected to the world I felt and how even though this is only the first book of a series. I felt like by the time I finished the book I felt like I had a pretty good understanding of the world.

2. I loved the way the characters were flawed.

Essun's storyline is told in second person like the reader is Essun. I enjoyed this because I could really connect with Essun and her feelings and even though I don't agree with all the choices she made I really enjoyed getting to see characters who were flawed and were unapologetic for the way they were.

3. The writing was BEAUTIFUL

Here are a couple examples from the book of the beautiful writing:
"There is an art to smiling in a way that others will believe. It is always important to include the eyes; otherwise, people will know you hate them."
"This is what you must remember: the ending of one story is just the beginning of another. This has happened before, after all. People die. Old orders pass. New societies are born. When we say 'the world has ended,' it's usually a lie, because the planet is just fine. But this is the way the world ends. This is the way the world ends. This is the way the world ends. For the last time."

Dislikes

1. The made up curse words like "rust"

It does make sense with the world but this really bothered me while reading

I wanted to keep this review non-spoilery so I won't tell you any of the plot that I loved but really I didn't dislike much about this book I found it very entertaining.

I listened to the audiobook through my library's OverDrive app and I purchased the ebook from Amazon which I will leave the link to down below.
